Lcd Television. Or Liquid Crystal Display. LCDs are slim, lightweight, use less power and are immune to the flicker of CRT, because they offer non-interlaced pictures.

LCD Television

An LCD or Liquid Crystal Display is a sandwich composed of multiple layers. Light from a fluorescent tube at the rear is passed through a layer of liquid crystals sandwiched between colour filters and polarizing plates.

Each pixel of the display has a red, green and blue element with a liquid crystal cell for each element. Pass light through two opposing polarizing filters and you get darkness. Put a layer of liquid crystals between them and their naturally twisted structure lets light pass through.

Apply a magnetic field to the crystal and it untwists, blocking the light once more. Applying varying degrees of twist to each crystal creates the image you see on screen.

LCDs are slim, lightweight, use less power and are immune to the flicker of CRT, because they offer non-interlaced pictures. In an LCD TV each liquid crystal cell is switched on and off individually so the image is created as a single frame. This removes the need to interlace fields.
